PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Rescue teams tell the NEWS CENTER they have located the body of the missing teenage swimmer who was pulled into an underwater pipe along the Mill Street Dam in the Housatonic River.
Pittsfield Police and Fire Departments were on the scene Wednesday in search of the 18-year-old man who is said to have been pulled under water by a current while swimming in the dam around 11:45 a.m. Crews said they believed he then got stuck in an underwater pipe.
Recovery crews attempted to stop the flow of the river through a spillway using a crane which lowered a large aluminum plate into place, backed up with large sand bags. This method reduced the water pressure, disrupting the whirlpool, which held the victim in place.
Still unable to dislodge the victim, two divers were sent into the water and the victim was finally recovered.
The woman who tried to rescue him, 21-year-old Kayla Philips of Pittsfield said they were just hanging out along the dam having a good time when he went for a swim to cool off, not knowing about the pipe.
Philips told the NEWS CENTER she met the teenager a few days ago, saying he was from Los Angeles, just traveling the country.
Authorities have not yet identified the teen pending family notification.
