COLONIE, N.Y. – The 2014-15 school budget was passed by the South Colonie Board of Education Tuesday night.
The district has faced a cumulative loss of $16 million in state aid over the past four years. To remain under the New York State school property tax levy limitation and balance the budget, the district was forced to cut expenses by $2.8 million.
The district also faces a $2.8 million loss during the next school year under the state’s gap elimination adjustment. As a result, the district voted to reduce over nine instructional positions and increase class sizes.
Teachers, bus drivers and supporters of the district’s athletic program shared their concerns about the various cuts.
The board unanimously passed the budget 8-0.
