EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – A career fair was held in East Greenbush Tuesday to learn more about working at the Capital View Casino and Resort, one of four casinos proposed in the region.
Hundreds of job seekers gathered in at the American Legion on Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush to learn about casino job opportunities in the town. The jobs offered at the fair won't be available unless the proposed casino wins the bid to build in the town.
However, opponents of the casino are calling the move premature and a marketing ploy because there is no state gaming license issued at this time.
Those details don't seem to worry casino marketer Rita Cox.
"We're moving full steam ahead, and we want to make sure people know about the jobs and careers that are available,” said Cox, Senior VP of Marketing for the Capital View and Casino.
Cox says the $300 million casino can be expected two years after a license is secured, and this fair aims to keep Rensselaer County informed.
“When you're looking at something down the road, you need time, to learn, you need time to develop the skills that will be necessary--and we think this is a good investment in our community no matter what,” said Cox.
But the anti-casino group, “Save East Greenbush” doesn't see it that way.
"It's pretty disingenuous to put out there jobs will be available when they don't know they are going to have them,” said Kara Benson, with “Save East Greenbush.”
Benson calls the fair nothing more than a marketing scheme.
“This is really just a political move to gain support off of the backs of people who need a job,” said Benson.
Those accusations are untrue according to Cox. Though the potential East Greenbush jobs may be two years away, Cox stresses the developer's, Saratoga Racino is currently hiring.
"There are jobs available right now at Saratoga, which is another great way to gain that experience before a casino opens in the Capital Region,” said Cox.
The East Greenbush Town Board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall and the casino will be a topic of discussion.
