HADLEY, N.Y. – The community gathered in support of the family of a Christmas Eve stabbing victim at Hadley Park on Sunday.
Friends and family came out to remember 42-year-old Patricia Burns.
Katlyn Petteys is a family friend. Petteys said the last words she heard Burns say came just one day before the mother of five was murdered in her home on Lake Avenue on Christmas Eve.
“I brought her a Christmas card, and she was happy and thanked me,” Petteys said. “And then she said she was going to bed, and that’s the last time I talked to her.
The Warren County Sheriff's Office said Burns’ ex-husband, 46-year-old Clifford Burns, stabbed her multiple times. Patricia's daughter, Megan Jenkins, sustained minor injuries while trying to intervene, according to deputies.
Jenkins attended the memorial on Sunday. She said she wanted to thank the community for honoring her mom.
Jenkins was tearful as balloons and lanterns headed towards the sky in her memory.
"My mom is very lively, and just to see all these people in memory of her was just really great," she said.
Petteys said Burns was always helping others.
"She was a remarkable woman. She loved to sing, play darts,” she said. “The summer was her favorite."
Burns leaves behind four children, including daughters Megan, Autumn, and Harley and son Nick.
The family found some comfort in their loss. They said Burns can now be with her daughter who passed away in 2010.
Petteys said Burns will never be forgotten.
“Her smile probably the most,” she said.
A fund has been set up for the family. The Warren County Key Club will also hold a benefit to support the family on January 12th at the Longhorn Restaurant and Pub in Lake Luzerne.
