UPDATE:

The man Schenectady police say was shot in the back following an attempted armed robbery near Crane Street Thursday night will eventually be okay.

They say the 41-year-old man was walking near the corner of 8th and Crane Streets around 6:45 p.m. when a group of four to five young black men, all wearing black hooded sweatshirts approached him.

At least one of them was allegedly armed with a silver handgun which the victim told police he was shot with.

Police say the man tried to run away from the group before being shot.

He was taken to Albany Medical Center where he is recovering.

A Schenectady man is recovering at Albany Med after being shot during an attempted robbery.

FOX23 News was the only crew on scene as medics treated the victim on a stretcher and rushed him to the emergency room.

Schenectady police say the man was shot near the corner of 8th and Crane Streets after three to five young black men in black hoodies attempted to rob him.

After being shot, the victim allegedly walked home to his apartment about two blocks away.

Once the chaos subsided, neighbors and witnesses were confused and upset. Sandy Dudley lives two doors down from the victim.

"All I seen is him walking up holding his side when I was just out here having a cigarette on my porch. And normally he says hi, and he didn't even say hi, he just ran into his house," said Dudley.

Dudley also says he hopes the man makes a full recovery because he is a "really nice guy."

"They're neighbors of ours, and they're very quiet, and they stay to their selves, and walk the kids to school in the morning. They're very good neighbors. You couldn't ask for better neighbors around here," he said.

Dudley was shaken and disturbed as he described what he saw a few minutes earlier.

He said, "When they took him out on the stretcher just now, he was screaming that he was in pain from being shot in the side."

John Walter was nearby, working at his shop AC Delco Walter's Auto Body Inc. at the time.

"We were just sitting there, and we heard like a screech and a bang and all of a sudden we heard sirens and everything," said Walter.

Schenectady police have interviewed witnesses and Lt. Mark McCracken says detectives are still investigating.
