MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. – Mechanicville Police Chief Joseph Waldron says three children were left unattended for about 30 minutes while their mother went to shop at Price Chopper last Saturday afternoon.

Luckily, officials say the kids were okay. Their mother, 24-year-old Ashley Degrasse was charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Chief Waldron says this case is a good reminder for people about the dangers of leaving kids in the car.

“When you're going to the super market, a lot of people think they're just going in for a couple of minutes -- what they don't take into account is the long lines,” he said.

And the chief says that one minute could turn into fifteen minutes -- which he says could mean life or death for a child.

“It’s dangerous; you can't leave your car unattended anyway with it on. So just plan, that when you're going out traveling or whatever, that you take the kids inside,” he said.

And with the kids out of school for the summer, the chief also says parents should get in the habit of always checking their cars when they reach their destination.
