GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — The suspicious death of a dog is being investigated by the Glens Falls Police Department.

A small, tan, mixed designer breed was found near the shore line on April 3 on Havilands Cove Beach.

The dog was two to four years of age, and its muzzle and legs were bound. Police said it appeared as though the dog may have drowned.

“The condition it was found; it was malicious intent, and somebody obviously murdered this animal,” Detective Sergeant Peter Casterino with the Glens Falls Police Department said.

The Glens Falls Police Department received a call from a man just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday saying he had found a deceased dog at Havilands Cove Beach with electrical tape around its front and back feet.

Casterino said he’s heard of cases like this before.

“We’ve seen a few cases like this,” he said. “They’re luckily few and far between. It is a felony, and it would be a part of Buster’s Law.”

Police brought the dog to the SPCA of Upstate New York after recovering the dog. Executive Director Kathy Cloutier said there are many options for small breed dogs to have been taken in if the owner no longer wanted to care for it.

“There’s no excuse for what happened,” she said. “If someone comes up and says, ‘Oh yeah, the dog bit my child or whatever,’ that’s not an excuse either because you can go to your vet and you can have your animal euthanized and a 12-14 pound animal is not going to break the bank.”

Police said they do not have any leads, but Adirondack Save a Stray is offering a $500 reward for anything leading to the arrests of anyone responsible in the case.

Contact police at 518-761-3840 or the SPCA of Upstate NY at (518)-798-5059.
