ALBANY, N.Y. – The Dream Act was voted down by the state senate Monday, but labor unions and immigration advocacy groups were in Albany Tuesday to lobby for the Act.

The Dream Act would have provided financial aid to New York students who are in the country illegally. It was two votes short of the 32 needed to pass.

Advocates are continuing to call on lawmakers and Governor Andrew Cuomo to put the Dream Act in the budget.

Advocates say over 4.3 million people who illegally immigrated to New York would have benefitted from passage of the Dream Act, and they are appalled the Senate would shut the door on those students.

Some Democratic lawmakers are calling the vote a setup due to the lack of notice and notable absence of potentially crucial Republican lawmakers.
