NEW BALTIMORE, N.Y. - Dawn Verdeschi is set to appear in New Baltimore Town Court Tuesday for the 39 dogs she signed over to the Columbia Greene Humane Society because right now they're all in limbo.
Officials removed 39 dogs from deplorable conditions from two properties in Durham nearly three weeks ago. The Greene County Sheriff's Office said they were covered in feces and without food or water.
Dawn Verdeschi, 43, is charged with failure to provide food and water. She signed the dogs over to the Columbia Greene Humane Society who said that nearly all of the dogs had new adopted homes to go to last week.
However, on Tuesday President of the Columbia Greene Humane Society Ron Perez said there is an issue with co-ownership and all of the dogs are now under a court order, stalling the adoption process.
The Greene County Sheriff's office has confirmed that the Humane Society has received calls from people claiming to own some of the dogs and that the sheriff's office is looking into the matter.
An attorney for the Humane Society declined to comment.
