EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - East Greenbush residents voiced their stance on the town's casino proposal at a public hearing Thursday night.

The $300 million project would be built off Thompson Hill Road and is continuing to gain support.

This week, the plan was endorsed by several area businesses, several chairmen and the Town of Poestenkill. But some community members at the hearing were outraged.

“I’m curious as to why a developer can come in and choose a property without any input from our town or elected representatives and plop it down next to our high school,” resident David Stone said.

The owners of the Saratoga Casino and Raceway are hoping to build the resort casino. The plan would be to build a 100,000 square foot casino featuring world class gaming, dining, entertainment along with a hotel and high-end retail.

Rita Cox from Saratoga Casino and Raceway said they have been a trusted partner for the Capital Region, and they’re trying to address as many concerns as they can.

“People know us. They know what they can expect, and they know that they can trust us to know that we’re going to do what we say we’re going to do and we’re looking forward to doing that in East Greenbush just like we’ve done in Saratoga,” she said.

Larry David said he’s owned property on Thompson Hill for more than 20 years, and he wouldn’t mind being neighbors with the project.

“”We’re talking about an opportunity to add not dozens of jobs and millions of dollars but thousands of jobs and millions of dollars,” he said.

The public hearing was held at Genet Elementary School. It began at 7 p.m. and ran past the closing time of 9 p.m. Hundreds of people were in attendance.
