GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – Elise Stefanik won the Republican primary in District 21 Tuesday and says she's ready and excited to provide a fresh generation of leadership.

Stefanik was running against Watertown investment manager Matthew Doheny to fill the seat left vacant after Democratic Congressman Bill Owens retired.

Stefanik is a vice president for her family’s plywood company and a former White House staffer. The 29-year-old spent the past several days campaigning and encouraging people to get out and vote.

“Requiring members of Congress to live by the same laws that they’ve passed,” she said. “Pursuing fundamental tax reform to help our small businesses grow, reducing the regulatory burdens facing small businesses. So I’m excited to have run an issue-based campaign, and I’m hoping to do so in the general election as well.”

The 21st district is known as the North Country district. It is comprised of Fulton, Warren, Washington and parts of Saratoga County.

Stefanik will now face the democratic nominee, former filmmaker Aaron Woolf in the November elections.
