LATHAM, N.Y. – Local fire departments needed to rescue several people who were stranded by the flash flooding in Latham Tuesday.

Pouring rain and heavy hail hit parts of Latham Tuesday. Roads became flooded and impassable causing traffic jams and several rescues.

“These heavy storms like this are tough,” Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan said. “They’re fast and furious.”

Blanchard said his fire department had to rescue eight people from Simply Irresistible Hair Salon by pulling them through the water.

“There were some places it was knee deep and some places it was neck deep,” Latham Fire Chief Neil Blanchard said.

No injuries were reported, but fire officials rescued at least ten people from their cars. Blanchard said it was because people drove through standing, rising water.

“The problem is what happens when you drive into standing water, it will stall your car out because the rain was so heavy the water rises so quick it’s going to trap you in your car, and we have to call in a special water rescue team to get you out,” he said.

Mahan said only northern Latham was hit with flooding. She said the town will speak with the state on the damage to Route 2 and Route 9.
