ALBANY, N.Y. – Many Albany residents have been left with a lot of clean up after major flash flooding stranded cars and washed out basements.

“I’d never been in a flash flood like this before,” James Paigo said.

Quick, heavy rain fall caused flash flooding in Albany Tuesday. Cars were underwater and belongings destroyed.

“All my things are ruined,” Donna Daniels-Bell said. “I lost everything.”

Daniels-Bell was home paying her bills when she heard a noise in the bathroom.

“And the bathtub was full, and it was shooting up in the air,” she said. “Because stuff was plugged in, I didn’t know if it was going to set a fire.”

Not knowing what else to do, Daniels-Bell ran out of her garden apartment on Warren Street but became trapped on her stoop.

“It’s unreal. That’s the word,” she said. “It’s very unreal.”

The waters rose fast in Albany. Trees and wires came crashing down. Many streets were closed, and many people were caught off guard.

“Hoping it’s not extensive damage, but who knows,” Paigo said.

Paigo tried to help push a stranded car only to return and find his car getting washed away.

“So I just hopped out of the car to push him through it,” he described. “By the time I get back to my car, open the door up, and the water was coming up and flooded me in.”

Damage remained behind as the waters receded.

“My closet in the bedroom, it went all the way up to my knees, so all my clothes are ruined,” Daniels-Bell said.

Red Cross is assisting people throughout the Albany area.
