RENSSELAER N.Y. - A benefit will be held for the fire victims of 52 Walker Street by Rensselaer Fest 2014 at The Rensselaer City Bazaar event.
The benefit was announced Tuesday after a fire tore through a three unit apartment building in Rensselaer.
Fire crews were called to an apartment fire at 4:47 a.m., Tuesday. Assistant Fire Chief Jay Corcoran says responding firefighters immediately called for mutual aid upon arriving at the structure.
Residents, including children who escaped the flames, were left standing bewildered on the sidewalk wrapped in blankets as crews battles the blaze.
One occupant, 70-year old Gwendolyn Fowler, a longtime renter of the street level apartment, did not make it out alive. Her cause of death has been ruled as asphyxia due to smoke and carbon monoxide inhalation.
One other occupant of the first floor was transported to Albany Medical center with non-life threatening injuries.
Other residents lost just about everything they had. The Red Cross is assisting them.
The benefit will feature a bounce house, music, games, 50/50, Fishing Gear Raffle and carnival fare. The event will also include a pizza dinner and movie.
Proceeds from the event will be used for sponsoring the 2014 Rensselaer Fest and to benefit the victims of the fire.
The benefit is to be held at Rensselaer EMS on August 9th
