SCHAGHTICOKE, N.Y. - The funeral of long time Fire Chief and former Mayor of Schaghitcoke William Moon was held on Monday morning.

William Moon, 89, died last week in his home with his family by his side. He was a well-known and respected man in his community.

The Schaghticoke Fire Department along with family and friends of Moon gathered at Transfiguration Parish to pay their final respects to a man who touched so many lives in the community.

Schaghticoke firefighters led the procession into the church this morning to pay their final respects.

"There's so much to remember him by. His legacy is a very vast one to remember," said Bill Hughes, one of Moon's grandchildren.

Hughes said he is honored to be related and to have known such a man.

"He was a legend in this town before I was born," said Moon.

The 25-year-old said his grandfather took on many jobs in his lifetime, serving overseas during World War II and taking on the role as mayor for the village of Schaghticoke for five years in the late 1990s.

However, the one job the family says Moon was most proud of was being a firefighter for his local community.

Fire Chief Mike Jackson said Moon will be remembered as a dedicated public servant. He was a member of the Schaghticoke Fire Department for 70 years, serving almost 38 of those years as fire chief.

"Everybody knew who he was and what he did and everything that he's contributed to the community," said Jackson.

Flags were flown at half-staff at the Schaghticoke Fire House on Monday. The color purple draped over the building to mourn the loss of the firefighter.

Many people said they will miss an extraordinary man who served his community, family and church.

Moon will be laid to rest at St. John's cemetery in the spring.
