East Greenbush N.Y. - The New York State Public High School Athletic Association, the third largest high school association in the country,  and the Special Olympics New York are teaming up to create Unified Sports.

The official announcement is set for this afternoon at Columbia High School in East Greenbush.

Organizers say the first of its kind collaborative initiative will bring intellectually disabled high school students new opportunities to get involved in extracurricular sports.

According to the US Government Accountability Office, the benefits that come with access and participation in extracurricular sports include socialization, improved teamwork, leadership skills and of course, fitness.

NEWS10 ABC is following this initiative this morning and will bring you more information on this major announcement later this afternoon.
