GLOVERSVILLE, N.Y. – A convicted sex offender faces charges of rape after allegedly having intercourse with a 14-year-old.

On Wednesday, July 16, at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the area of Bleecker Street and Church Street, a Gloversville Police Officer encountered a disturbance involving several persons, including some juveniles.

While investigating that incident, it was brought to the officer’s attention that James Becker had been seen holding hands with a 14-year-old female while walking near the basketball court on East Fulton Street.

Members of the young girl’s family were present and witnessed this. Knowing that Becker was a convicted sex offender and currently on the Sex Offender Registry, they confronted him, which led to a minor physical altercation.

Further investigation led to information that Becker had sexual intercourse with the 14-year-old. Becker, a Level 2 Sex Offender, was interviewed and subsequently arrested. He is charged with felony Rape in the Second Degree and more charges are pending.

His arrest left many of his neighbors sick to their stomach. Danielle Fraumany lived in the same apartment building as him.

“I lived on the second floor, and when I found out what he was, I moved,” she said. “Nobody will let their kids out because they’re afraid of what he’s going to do.”

Fraumany said she saw Becker’s activity going on for a week, which prompted multiple calls to the police.

“We called the police because we’ve seen young ladies going into the house, and let them know that he’s a registered sex offender, and he should not have been around them girls,” she said.

Neighbors said his presence on their block scared them to not let their children outside.

“I have two boys that live outside. They’re constantly outside,” Christie Darling said. “I can’t let them out. My nieces want to bring them outside, but I can’t cause I’m scared.”

A playground is only a few steps from his home, and with many families living nearby, the tension on the block has recently grown.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Darling said. “I don’t know if he’s going to be drunk or he’s going to flip out and come over and chase my nieces and my kids. It’s ridiculous.”

But now that Becker has been arrested, Fraumany hopes peace will return to her block.

“Now that he’s gone, he better stay gone,” she said.

Becker was arraigned and remanded to the Fulton County Correctional Facility on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.
