GREEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Hundreds took to the pavement Friday to raise cancer awareness and money to fund advancements in treatment.

People started piling into Veterans Memorial in Green Island around 4 p.m. to drop off donations and get ready to walk all night for Relay for Life.

A mother-daughter team who are both cancer survivors were among those taking part.

“It’s a support system for them,” Mary Ellen Bourgeois said. “Sometimes they’re not aware of what’s out there. And they learn that there’s things out there that they can do.”

“There’s all different kinds of cancers that are here,” Donna Bourgeois said. “So it’s all different kinds of stories, all different kinds of lives.”

Walkers will be going strong until 6 a.m. Saturday. They will get help staying awake through the night with the help of an hour-long s’mores cook off and a pancake breakfast just before sunrise.
