GREENWICH, N.Y. – A support group for grassroots charities was able to step in and protect a family of six black bears raised at a local zoo.

The bears were scheduled by court order to be euthanized earlier in June. After being notified of the court order by the Department of Environmental Conservation, Hannah Shaw of Rock to the Rescue found two sanctuaries to collaborate in temporary and permanent care of the bears.

“We got on the phone and called all of our contact and tried to really get people to get together and within two days, we were able to get Lions, Tigers and Bears on board and Wild Animal Sanctuary on board to help these bears,” she said.

All three foundations are nonprofit charities.

“We rely solely on funding from foundations and from individuals, from people who make donations to us, so we get a generous grant of $52,000 dollars from the ASPCA to help us with this rescue,” Shaw said.

Shaw said the cost of proper care for a bear for one year is around $10,000. Rock to the Rescue is making a $10,000 donation in addition to the ASPCA’s donation in order to guarantee accredited care for all six black bears.

The family will be transported San Diego by Lions, Tigers and Bears for temporary care while a facility at Colorado’s Wild Animal Sanctuary is built.

“The animals did not ask for this life, so we step in and we try to give them a better life and hope at a sanctuary where they will have some freedom and a life as close to a wild life as possible,” Shaw said.
