MINDEN, N.Y. – A heavy thunderstorm Thursday caused significant damage in the town of Minden and the town of St. Johnsville.

Downed trees, a collapsed barn and a tractor trailer was left on its side as strong winds swept through Montgomery County.

“I thought it was a tornado, but it only had a half moon twist to it,” resident Leland Hazzard said.

Hazzard grew up on Fordsbush Road in the town of Minden where a lot of damage took place. He said he huddled with his family and friends during the storm and listened as everything around him started to tumble.

“It was so bad that I was sitting here in the pull barn and that trailer blew over, and I couldn’t see it,” he described. “It was like a snow storm with big hail stones coming down.”

The driver wasn’t inside the trailer at the time, but the owners of the barn were inside the structure when it came down.

The barn owners said they were in the process of refurbishing the barn when the storm hit. One said almost 20 men, women and children were inside the barn as it crumbled around them.

“[It sounded] like a plane crashing,” Barbara Masi said. “Thank the Lord we’re okay.”

Masi lives on Highway 5S. She said she waited out the storm with her elderly mother and came out to find trees scattered around her property and a garage door torn down.

“It was laying on top of my car,” she said. “My car was in the garage.”

Despite the damage, Montgomery County’s emergency manager said everyone seemed to be unharmed and okay. Residents said they were shaken up by the storm but are glad they are alive.

“The Lord works in mysterious way,” Hazzard said “He didn’t hurt nobody, but he showed us who is boss.”
