VALATIE, N.Y. - State police say 8,000 gallons of home heating oil was spilled when a truck rolled over in the Columbia County village of Valatie.
Police say the truck turned over around noon in Kinderhook at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 9H. The road was closed and a "limited" evacuation of nearby homes and businesses was planned.
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says a State of Emergency has been declared for a two mile area around the accident site. Residents and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The Ichabod Crane School District is telling parents to expect delays in children's transportation home Thursday afternoon due to the accident. All students are safe and there is no imminent danger involving the situation.
The Superintendent of Schools is at the scene with the HAZMAT Team getting updates as they are available. All afterschool activities are cancelled including the Open House at the Middle School. The school asks that parents please not come to pick up children any earlier than you would on a normal school day.
Cleanup crews from the Department of Environmental Conservation were headed to the scene.
The truck's driver suffered minor injuries.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
