KINGSTON, N.Y. – For the second time, a homeless man in Kingston found a large sum of money on the street and turned it in to police.

Hassell “Junior” Barber approached Officer Vincent DePalma around 1:15 p.m. Friday to tell the officer he had found a “wad” of money on the ground earlier in the day. Barber said he wanted to turn the money in so that it may be returned to its rightful owner.

DePalma took the money and is investigating ownership. Barber didn’t count the money before handing it over, but police said it was more than $250.

This is the second time Barber has given found money to police. In July 2013, Barber found a wallet with $485 in cash in it. The wallet and cash were returned to the owner shortly after.

The 67-year-old did not want any attention regarding either incident because he said turning in the money was just the right thing to do. Many Kingston residents were not surprised by Barber’s actions. They said that’s the kind of person he is.

Brian Coley works on Broadway – the area Barber is known to frequent. Coley said he sees Barber every so often and tries to offer help.

“I’ll offer him a coffee, and he declines,” Coley said. “He’s very humble.”

Coley said Barber’s actions are refreshing to see, especially since Barber could have used that money for himself.

“My hats off to him for being that person as an example of how we all should be,” Coley said.

Sergeant Kirk Strand works for the Kingston Police Department. He agreed with Coley.

“I believe with all my heart that the average person finds something, and they’re going to keep it and keep moving,” he said. “Just that he found this money earlier in the day, and he wanted to turn it over. You’d expect he could use the money more than a lot of people, so it’s good to see that he does that.”

Police still have the money and are looking for the owner.
