LATHAM, N.Y. – A final high school career shot was able to be taken by an injured Shaker basketball player.

After an undefeated regular season, the Shaker girls basketball team expected to be at Hudson Valley Community College this weekend alongside Hoosic Valley, but their early exit from the postseason allowed for a moment far more meaningful.

“It was pretty hard to watch,” Shaker senior Adrienne Gambles said.

It was not the view Gambles expected to have her senior season.

“It was during winter break at the end of December, and I remember coming home after watching them practice and my mom told me about it,” she explained.

Her mother said Gambles had torn her ACL and her senior season was over.

“It’s a really big part of my life and finding out; it sucked,” she said. “I cried a lot.”

“She’s like the glue to our team, and I really couldn’t imagine our team without her,” Merrick Rowland said.

So Gambles stayed. Her role just changed.

“I saw me being a big supporter of the team,” Gambles said.

Gambles went from cheerleader to water girl to coach.

“I took over her role, and it was her role so she gave me advice all season,” senior Jenni Barra said.

And Gambles accepted that her view from the bench would be the last she’d see as a Shaker senior until a few days ago during the Exceptional Seniors game.

“It was kind of a last minute thing,” Gambles said. “They said ‘Why don’t you let her shoot her last basket for high school.’”

So she did.

“It was such a good moment. I wouldn’t take it back for anything,” Barra said. I wish I could go back to that exact moment when she came on. Everyone was so excited. We were so excited to be on the court with her one last time.”

“It was a closure for me just to know I got to shoot one more time,” Gambles said. “Be on the court one more time with everybody watching. It was nice.”

Everybody watching her as she watched the ball go through the basket – the lasting view she’ll take away from senior season.
