ALBANY N.Y. –The New York State smoking rate among adults has fallen to an all-time low over the past 10 years, although according to officials the same does not hold true when it comes to people with mental illness.

According to the Albany County Department of Mental Health people living with mental illness smoke more and die more from smoking related sicknesses than do people without mental illness.

Smoke related deaths are preventable, and to work towards prevention Albany County will be kicking off its smoking cessation initiative Thursday.

The Department of Mental Health will be working with the different counties in the Capital Region to make a change and bring awareness on the dangers of smoking.

In taking on this task The Department of Mental Health will be collaborating with St. Peter's Health Partners and the Capital District Tobacco-Free Coalition.

There will be a kick-off event at the Department of Health Thursday at 12 p.m. A number of vendors and resources will available to talk about the health risks of smoking and provide resources to aid to those who want to quit.
