GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – A local school’s athletic field has been ruined after dozens of cars parked to take the State Civil Service Exam.

Farnsworth Middle School's athletic fields have been ruined after the tests on Saturday. The testing was supposed to continue on Sunday, but the Guilderland School District Superintendent cancelled, saying she didn't want to chance the situation again.

"I actually saw on Saturday and I was speechless," said Guilderland Superintendent Dr. Marie Wiles.

On Monday, there were still tire marks across the field.

Cars parked on the athletic field because there was simply not enough room to accommodate everyone taking the State Civil Service Exams over the weekend.

"We expected 1,000 people total over the course of the day and more than twice showed up," said Wiles.

Dr. Marie Wiles said she wasn't expecting these many test takers and she said it's mainly because of the lack of communication between the school district and the Department of Civil Service.

"We needed the help of Guilderland Police to manage traffic and we simply did not have enough places for cars to park," she explained.

As a result the school district cancelled Sunday's exams, letting people know on the school's website and social media pages. The superintendent said she doesn't know how much it would cost to repair.

"The bottom line is we will repair the field. We already talked about what we will do as an alternative for PE classes and conversation about where athletic events would happen on alternative fields," Wiles said.

She does say she is thankfully there were no injuries or accidents from Saturday's parking situation, but a few cars did get stuck on the muddy field.

The school has been in contact with the Department of Civil Services. No word yet on how this will be paid for.

The Department of Civil Services did not return NEWS10 ABC's phone call on Monday yet.
