ALBANY, N.Y. - Joe Bena attended his last state championship as head coach of the Duanesburg High School wrestling team over the weekend.
Bena is the winningest wrestling coach in New York State history. He had three wrestlers during the tournament. One lost in the preliminaries, and two are moving on to the quarterfinals.
But Bena said he wouldn't want to be mentioned this weekend. He wants the focus to be on the Section II wrestlers competing.
"This is it. This is the last one," Bena's son, John Bena, said. "He's very excited to be here. We weren't sure he was going to make it. But back at the hospital, they said to him, ‘What are your goals, Mr. Bena?' and he said my personal goal is to get to the state tournament. I've got kids wrestling there."
Bena suffered a stroke nine days before the championships.
