ROTTERDAM, N.Y. – Three Rotterdam Highway Department employees were injured by lightning during a storm Wednesday, according to Rotterdam Town Supervisor Harry Buffardi.
The incident happened on Wednesday around 2 p.m. at the former Curry Road Shopping Center on Curry Road.
Officials say the workers were in the process of loading a packer truck with empty boxes when lightning struck the area. The workers were subsequently knocked to their feet.
Rotterdam police lieutenant Jason Murphy said an officer was also there monitoring the area. The officer was not injured, and called in the lightening strike to 911.
The workers were taken to Ellis Hospital, where they are awake and alert, according to officials. They sustained minor injuries.
"They were evaluated, their injuries were described as being minor. So then they were transported to Ellis hospital for further evaluation," said Lt. James Murphy
The current condition of the three workers is unknown.
Water distribution at the accident site has been put on hold until Thursday at 9 a.m.
