GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – The Guilderland Elks kicked off a new annual event this summer.
The Elks held their first ever 5k walk and run to raise money for children's cancer research
A few of the organizers who were at the event on Saturday have known people who have been affected by cancer.
Whether people decided to walk or run, dozens came out to step out against cancer and give local research a leg up with the money raised.
Members of the Guilderland Elks have started this event to support their past and current members, while also helping local children who suffer from cancer. Organizers say this walk was created in memory of members who have lost their lives to cancer and those who may have to fight the battle one day.
Some of the volunteers at the event like Edgar Dickinson know how crucial money for research can be.
“I’m a survivor of prostate cancer for 22 years now,” explained Dickinson.
Members say they are happy to be able to contribute toward research that could, one day, save more lives.
