ST. JOHNSVILLE, N.Y. – After flooding damaged hundreds of homes in Fort Plain and surrounding areas, the HC Smith Benefit Club joined victims in need of help with willing volunteers to distribute donated clothing Saturday,

"We want to help them kind of pick through and get what they need to get back on with their lives," said Tish Christensen of the Benefit Club. "A lot of these people have lost everything."

Christensen said she amazed by the kindness of others who have been dropping off goods for flood victims since early last week.

"This is a time when people really don't have anything and they're bringing in brand new things," she said.

Neil Clark, of St. Johnsville, is one of the volunteers willing to lend a helping hand in any way he can.

He began by donating a handful of large T-shirts, but has grown more involved in an effort to help. After viewing the extent of the devastation, Clark and his family began handing out sandwiches and going door to door with water bottles.

"It's very muddy and devastating,' Clark said. "I just feel for the people up there."

Many other volunteers with the benefit club have joined the effort to provide meals for those still hurting from the damage.

The benefit club, located at 538 Crum Creek Road, will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for flood victims to pick up any of the available they need. If you would like to donate, the benefit club is asking for clothing, canned goods and cleaning products.
