More than 1,800 people are expected to attend the dinner Thursday, and the mission is devoting two days to prepare for the large crowd.

Preparations begin on Monday with volunteers baking 700 pounds of turkey and chopping 400 pounds of onions and 250 pounds of celery. The cooking continues on Tuesday by cutting 600 pounds of yams and slicing the baked turkeys.

Doors at the mission will open at 11 a.m. Thursday, and dinner will be served from noon to 2 p.m.

A Healthy Hearts Fair for the homeless and needy will also take place on Thursday from 12:15 to 2 p.m. to provide the homeless and needy with free flu shots, blood pressure checks and heart health education.
