MALTA N.Y. –Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo has announced the arrest of a Malta man following a homicide investigation.
According to authorities, on Sunday morning, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 9 Meadow Rue Place for a welfare check on Kathleen Wilkinson. Wilkinson’s son called police to report that he had not been heard from her for several days.
The responding deputy was greeted at the door by Charles Wilkinson, 68. Authorities say that following a discussion with Wilkinson, the deputy entered the home.
The deputy says he located Kathleen Wilkinson deceased on a bedroom floor. No immediate cause of death was obvious. The victim was 65-years-old.
Authorities responded to the home on Sunday, including State Police. Multiple agencies remained on the scene into Monday morning.
An investigation revealed that Charles Wilkinson allegedly killed Kathleen Wilkinson during a physical domestic dispute. Charles Wilkinson continued to live in the home while his wife was deceased in the bedroom, say authorities.
Charles Wilkinson is a former Nassau County Police Officer. Since his retirement, he worked part-time, most recently doing security for Global Foundries. His wife was retired.
“Anytime we have a law enforcement official as a defendant, it's particularly difficult but the Sheriff and his officers were able to obtain substantial proof. We are confident we can sustain out burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Saratoga District Attorney James Murphy III.
The couple had lived in the home for 10 years, and the home was recently put up for auction since it has been put in foreclosure.
"Certainly as part of any investigation the couple's financial circumstances are part of the investigation and will be looked into,” said Murphy.
One of the couple’s neighbors spoke out after learning about the incident.
"Really shocked to hear about that. I’m not even sure the details but definitely doesn't sound like something that happens around here,” said Gardner Crandall, a neighbor of the Wilkinson’s.
The cause and time of death have not been determined pending autopsy results.
There is no word on a motive.
Charles Wilkinson has been charged with second degree murder and was arraigned in the Town of Malta Court. He was remanded to the Saratoga County Jail without ba
