SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A man accused of raping a girl and killing the girl's baby, was arraigned on Monday.
Police say Herman Robinson, 38, of Schenectady sexually abused a young girl for more than six years. Officials say he impregnated the victim, and then killed the baby.
After an extensive investigation by police, the man is facing a number of charges, including murder. On Monday he pled not guilty to the charges
The District Attorney's Office says the alleged abuse began in 2006 when the victim was just 11. They say it happened inside Robinson's home on Pleasant Street and continued when he moved to Albany Street.
According to authorities, the victim became pregnant in 2009 and Robinson allegedly helped deliver the baby in March 2009. The investigation revealed that the victim was in school and was able to hide her pregnancy. Authorities say Robinson killed the baby and disposed the body after it was born.
Police say that back in December last year, police were called to the home for some sort of medical emergency, and Robinson was later arrested.
The District Attorney's Office said the victim was able to hide the pregnancy. A longtime family friend who was inside the courtroom on Monday said she had no idea this was going on. She calls it despicable and even went onto say she wanted to spit in his face.
"I don't believe nothing he has to say. I was shocked he pleads not guilty, but I guess that's how the process of criminal justice system works. But I thought maybe he would say guilty so he could put this to rest for her so she wouldn't have to be dragged her through this mess," said the friend.
Both the prosecution and defense had no comment after the proceeding. Robinson is due back in court on May 22nd and currently is behind bars with no bail.
