ALBANY, N.Y. - An obsession with heavy metal has a local man in hot water with police.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares said 44-year-old David Kuehl is taking part in what is referred to as "Urban Mining."

Kuehl is accused of stealing dozens of manhole covers and storm grates from towns across Albany County for cash.

Soares said Kuehl was selling the covers to unscrupulous scrap dealers.

"It's dangerous to the public and drivers," said Soares.

One of the victims of urban mining said Kuehl was captured on surveillance video lifting the heavy covers and tossing them into the backseat of a car. Officials say the car matched to Kuehl.

Kuehl has also been accused of literally lifting manhole covers and storm grates before. Officials say he was arrested this past December. Police say he was in possession of storm grates from Albany, Colonie, and Guilderland, as well as hypodermic needles and drugs.
