FORT EDWARD, N.Y. – A 31-year-old man was being held at a correctional facility when he attempted to escape from the jail Thursday.
According to Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy, the Washington County Sheriff's Office arrested Matthew S. Maxwell, an inmate of the Washington County Correctional Facility. He was charged with felony escape.
Maxwell had been working on a kitchen work detail and fled the jail on foot attempting to use the departing delivery vehicle as cover. His actions were witnessed by sheriff's office staff, and he was pursued on foot. He was taken into custody only a block away after a brief foot chase.
Maxwell was charged with assault back in June after he allegedly stuck a woman in the face fracturing her jaw. In that incident, Maxwell fled the scene before police arrived, but he was later arrested in Glens Falls with the help of social media.
He was arrested, processed at the Fort Edward Office and arraigned in the Town of Fort Edward Court. He was remanded to the Washington County Correctional Facility for lack of $100,000 cash or $200,000 bail bond.
