GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. (AP) - A northern New York man and his mother are jailed near their upstate hometown after police say the two abducted a 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl, who the man claims is his daughter. Officials in St. Lawrence County say 39-year-old Peter Tarbox and 55-year-old Annette Williams were driving to their home in Norwood when a police officer in the village of Gouverneur spotted their car at a gas station Thursday night around 11 p.m. and took them into custody without incident. Officials say the girl, 10-year-old Alexandria Jade Long, was found safe in the vehicle. Pennsylvania State Police issued an Amber Alert in New York around 9:20 p.m. after they determined the girl had been abducted Thursday afternoon from her home in Gordon in eastern Pennsylvania and was traveling heading toward the town of Norwood, N.Y. Police say they're trying to verify Tarbox's claim that the girl is his daughter.
Police initially said the suspect is the former acquaintance of the abducted child's mother from seven years ago, and is a stranger to the child.
