TROY, N.Y. – A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in State Prison for Attempted Online Enticement of a minor, according to officials.
Michael Heppelle was sentenced to State Prison in United States District Court on Tuesday.
Heppelle pleaded guilty to charges stemming from an incident which occurred in September and October 2012. According to the U.S. District Attorney in the Northern District of NY, Heppelle contacted a person and offered to pay $500 if the person could arrange for Heppelle to have a sexual encounter with a minor.
The person who Heppelle contacted, a witness in this case, reported the information to law enforcement. Law enforcement then had the witness tell Heppelle that if he was serious about engaging in sexual acts with a 12-year-old girl, he could meet the child on a specified date, time, and location.
In October 2012, Heppelle arrived to the location and was subsequently arrested. Authorities found the Troy man in possession of $500 in U.S. currency, a cell phone, two condoms, and a lubricant typically used for sexual intercourse.
This case was investigated by the FBI and the Rensselaer County Sheriff's Office.
