GOLETA, Calif. – In just minutes on Friday night, witnesses say a gunman inside a black BMW opened fire in the college town of Isla Vista, near the University of California Santa Barbara.

One witness states that she was approached by the gunman on Friday night.

She said that she turned around and walked in the opposite direction, which is when the suspected gunman shot towards her, but missed.

Once police were on the scene authorities say the gunman fired at them, and then took off in his car. Authorities say the suspect was spotted and another exchanged of gunfire occurred.

Shortly after, the gunman crashed into a parked vehicle.

The sheriff’s deputies approached the crashed vehicle and determined that the suspect inside was dead due to an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

"All I can say again is how saddened I am by this tragedy and how saddened I am to see once again the work of a mass shooter in Santa Barbara,” said University of California President Janet Napolitano.

Police found a semi-automatic handgun in the car, they believe the suspect was mentally disturbed and acted alone.

Authorities are now trying to piece together all the crime scenes and a motive. Investigators are also looking at a YouTube video titled “Retribution”, which has since been removed from the website. It was posted by the young man, who goes on a rant about women ignoring and rejecting him.
