GLENVILLE, N.Y. – An investigation in Glenville has been closed after a misunderstanding led to police being contacted about a woman allegedly stealing a Toys for Tots donation box from a local Walmart.

Police say after reports of the theft aired, the woman contacted Walmart and spoke with management about the incident.

According to police, it appears she had a separate toy donation box in the store, approved by Walmart management, for a charity event not related to Toys for Tots. She picked up the box Monday evening and placed it in her vehicle, and employees who witnessed it thought she was stealing the Toys for Tots donations. Those employees reported the incident to security who then called Glenville Police.

Further investigation by Wal Mart security and an interview conducted by Glenville Police with the woman involved has concluded that no crime was committed and that it appears to have been a miscommunication issue.

Glenville Police have officially closed the case as unfounded.

Shame on the multiple media outlets who published the initial story without actually getting all the facts. Good thing no one knew the woman's name, or they would have slandered her with no reservation, using their "get-of-jail-free" word "alleged," which apparently makes it ok for muckraking journalists to pass off speculation as facts while condemning innocent people. Today's journalists are jokes. Anyone who ran with the earlier story owes this woman a huge mea culpa.
