ALBANY, N.Y. – Drunk driving may be prevented by a new mobile application.
Stop DWI New York implemented its new app called Have A Plan. The goal of the app is to stop drunk driving, and it gives people the resources they need at their fingertips.
“The nice thing about it is if you’re intoxicated and you make the conscious decision not to drive, you hit a button, and it automatically locates the closest cabs to you,” Stop DWI Administrator Sgt. Marty Zaloga said.
The app will also contact family and friends if a cab is not near the person utilizing the app.
“You can preprogram designated drivers for you,” Zaloga explained. “Friends, family, you hit that button, you can automatically dial them.”
Albany Common Council member Ron Bailey recently downloaded the app. He said he would never ignore that call in the middle of the night.
“The drastic part of it is if you don’t go and they decide to get behind the wheel and then the next day they’re in an accident and somebody’s killed, or whatever, how are you going to feel the next day with your conscience because they called you and you didn’t respond,” he said.
The app also includes games and a way to tell if the user has had too much to drink. Authorities said the app can only provide an estimated Blood Alcohol Content, and they remind drivers that buzzed driving is still drunk driving.
“We stress, don’t use that for making a decision on whether to drive or not because, again, it’s not 100 percent, and if you get stopped and you are over the legal limit, you will be arrested,” Zaloga said.
The app is free and available for iPhone and Android.
