MALTA, N.Y. – Malta residents may see more roundabouts in the area.

The Town Board plans to meet to determine if there will be two more roundabouts coming to Malta and residents are giving mixed opinions on the idea.

Marcia Lemmond, a Malta resident is against the idea of more roundabouts, saying "It causes more accidents than it does really help the traffic flow."

However, Mark Mindel, another resident, said "It lets the traffic flow freely and I don't see why that wouldn't work here."

There are plenty of mixed opinions among those that live along the Round Lake Road Corridor. The Malta Town Board approved the plan earlier this month and now wants to use eminent domain on 13 properties to make it a reality.

Town Supervisor Paul Sausville calls it the best alternative, explaining that after hearing concerns from residents regarding public safety and congestion two separate engineering companies both recommended roundabouts.

Sausville said "It slows the speed down and a pedestrian only has to look in one direction and there’s a safe area in the middle of the road."

The town plans to put one at the intersection with Ruhle Road by the Stewart’s and another at Chango Drive, which is close to an elementary school on one side and a retirement community on the other.

Gunther Bartscherer a Malta Meadows resident said "We have four roundabouts in Malta and personally I think they're working out great."

Margarita Woelfersheim explained "We are seniors here and I can walk fast but maybe some of us can't."
