BENNINGTON, Vt. – A Vermont woman was accused of tampering with her 6-year-old child's ADD/ADHD medication.

Bennington Police were alerted by Kristy Prouty, 32, who said her child's medication, Vyvanse, was tampered with by her child's stepmother in August.

The police department seized the medication to have it sent for analysis at the Vermont Forensic Lav in Waterbury, Vt.

According to authorities, on October 18, State Police received a complaint from the Pownal Elementary School who claimed the same medication used by the 6-year-old child was tampered with.  The School Nurse normally administered the medication, which was brought to the school by Prouty earlier that day.

State Police say there were six pills missing and the remaining pills were in fact filled with either powdered sugar or Prozac. Prozac is a controlled drug used as a mood stabilizer and in treating depression.

The child had consumed one of the altered pills; however the young boy was not injured by consuming the tampered medication.

An investigation led to the arrest of Prouty, who is accused of removing the controlled prescription drug from the capsules and substituting the Prozac or powdered sugar.

Prouty was charged with Aggravated Assault, Cultivation/Manufacture of a Controlled and Regulated Drug, Prescription Fraud, Possession of a Regulated Drug, Reckless Endangerment, Cruelty to a Child under 10, Petit Larceny and   False Information to Police.  The charge of Providing False Information to Police stems from the woman giving false statements to police, in order to deflect the investigation away from herself.

The mother was sent to the Marble Valley Correctional Center for lack of $10,000 bail. She is due in court on Thursday at 12:30 p.m.
