Not a person in sight at the Occupy Albany camp today, as the city got ready for the 15th annual "Last Run 5k."
The protesters were ordered to leave from 3pm to 6pm so not to interfere with the event. But as soon as the race wrapped up, they came right back.
"Fire folks cleared the barricades and about 10 minutes after, we were back in," says protester Bradley Russell.
But not for long. Today was temporary. But come next Thursday, their permit with the city is up and occupiers are supposed to vacate Academy Park for good. Still, those we spoke with tonight say they won't budge.
"I'm not planning on going anywhere," Russell says. "Short of them physically removing us, I'm pretty sure everyone has intentions of remaining right in this spot."
There is a chance they could get their way. Occupiers tell us their legal counsel is in the process of negotiating with the city to extend that permit.
"So far everything with the city has been positive and I think as long as we stay within the parameters that have been set forth, I don't see any drastic issues arising," says protestor Nicole Higgins.
They're supposed to get an answer on tuesday. Also on Tuesday, Russell tells us the group will be signing a lease for office space at 306 Hudson Avenue.
In the meantime, despite nightly temperatures dipping into the teens, occupiers plan to tough it out.
"We're ready. We've got sub zero sleeping bags," Russell says. "We're locked down and ready to go."
