NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley left Berkshire Superior Court Thursday with news that will gave the city of North Adams some hope.

Superior Court Judge John Agostini issued a temporary injunction preventing the immediate closure of North Adams Regional Hospital’s emergency services over the course of the next week. AG Coakley knows how critical Thursday’s ruling is for North Adams.

“This injunction is the first step towards preventing an immediate health crisis for the area and keeping emergency services open,” she said in a statement. “We are continuing to work closely with the administration and elected officials to help ensure continued access to critical health services for the entire community.”

Mayor Richard Alcombright praised Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and other state legislators for their actions in helping the city.

“No matter if you’re the smallest city in the commonwealth, which North Adams is, or the biggest, which is Boston, they’ll answer their phones and pay attention,” he said. “I’m just thankful that we’ve gotten this kind of response, and we’ll just continue to push forward for healthcare in North Adams and Northern Berkshire.”

North Adams Regional Hospital released its first statement Thursday night.

It read in part, "Northern Berkshire Healthcare is taking the necessary steps to comply with today's court decision. The NARH Emergency Department will remain open with staffing including emergency physicians, registered nurses, lab, medical imaging, and pharmacy services, as well as necessary support staff."

Judge Agostini also appointed Berkshire Medical Center to resume operation at NARH with the North Adams staff providing emergency services as patient flow is evaluated.
