ALBANY, N.Y. – New York will be the backdrop for a new Netflix series based on Marvel Comics superheroes.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that the Walt Disney Company, Marvel and Netflix are joining forces to film a new series in New York City.

For comic book collectors in the Capital Region, they’re hoping the extra screen time translates into more popularity for a B-list superhero.

Daredevil is about a blind attorney turned superhero. The character is one of four superheroes that will be part of the 60 one-hour episodes to be filmed.

“There is a chance to redeem the character in a more elongated way,” J.C. Glindmyer said.

Glindmyer works at Albany comic book store Earth World. He said Daredevil may be the next Iron Man.

“More and more people are familiar with [Iron Man],” he said. “I think this will happen with Daredevil.”

Daredevil is a B-list superhero, but his popularity may change with some visual effects and movie magic.

New York City will be the principal backdrop for the new series. Nick Franjesko has been collecting the Daredevil series for more than 20 years.

“I wish I lived closer to New York City to be an extra or in the background,” he said. “Shooting movies and bringing attention to the original forefront where they started is pretty cool.”

The series will create at least 3,000 new jobs and bring millions of dollars into the state’s economy.

Filming is expected to begin in 2014 with the series on Netflix in 2015.
