SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.--Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo announced the start of agency-wide public email for all law enforcement, administrative and support staff on Monday.
His office is using social media to help push transparency and a useful partnership between his office and the public.
"Social media is huge everyone knows that," said newly elected Saratoga County Sheriff Zurlo, who is jumping on the opportunity.
"The way social media is, so many people have it and hopefully people will feel comfortable using it. As far as Twitter, the department will use it for things like road closures, to get that information out to the public quickly.
Their newly launched twitter page is paired with a new email address because the office sees social media as a great tool to utilize.
The Sheriff Office's New Year does not end with Twitter. The office's website is also under construction, but not for long. Monday, the office announces the new public email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Zurlo said he realizes sometimes the public feels more comfortable leaving tips when there is more anonymity.
A fellow Saratoga County colleague, District Attorney Jim Murphy, is also heavily into using the Twitter sphere. Murphy is constantly tweeting about cases and developing information. However, Zurlo admits social media takes time to get used to.
"I had a Facebook page during my campaign and it's a learning curve," explained Zurlo. "But I have a great staff that helps me get all this social media info out to the public."
