SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A building refurbished by local students was toured by two local lawmakers.
Eighty students part of a program called Youthbuild rebuilt a once dilapidated building in Schenectady. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Paul Tonko took a tour of the building Monday.
The lawmakers not only commended the students on their work but also urged Congress to reinvest federal funds into similar programs.
“Nationwide, Youthbuild has served more than 130,000 students in 46 states and has built 28,000 affordable home units for the homeless and low income individuals in their community,” Gillibrand said. “The truth is Youthbuild works.”
Youthbuild’s federal support ran out two years ago, and the senator is pushing her fellow leaders in Congress to consider putting money back into the fund because it not only creates homes but jobs as well.
