GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – A meeting was held in Guilderland Wednesday night to review potential plans to construct a sidewalk on Route 146.

Safety is a major concern for residents who live near Route 146. They hope the construction project will slow down traffic and make the road less hazardous. In separate incidents, two people have been hit by a car while walking on the street in recent years.

The plan is to install a 4,500 foot walking path on the south side of Route 146 and an additional 350 foot sidewalk on the north side.

The cost is projected to be nearly $590,000 and will be mostly completed by December.

Residents said the area needs a path to get kids and adults off the road. Some of them said they have been nearly hit by cars.

Seth Whitney lives on Route 146.

“I had to dive over snow banks several times walking to school because when you’re this close to the school you don’t get transportation – public transportation – so you have to walk,” he said. “So, it’ll be good for the kids.”

Susan Wheelar-Weeks also lives on Route 146. She said the road is too dangerous to walk.

“To cross the road; to walk up and down the road; to the post office, the little deli, whatever,” she said, “one has to be suicidal. It’s that dangerous.”

Residents at the meeting also want cross walks painted on the road and an additional traffic light installed to help slow cars that race through the area even though the speed limit is marked at 35 mph.

The design is expected to be approved in April.
