SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Many members of the 2012 Tony Award winning Broadway show crew will be staying to Schenectady as the show comes to Proctors.

Having just closed on Broadway on August 24, Newsies is kicking off its nationwide tour in Schenectady on October 11.

They aren't just opening here though, they are also teching-meaning they are setting and blocking the stage for its entire time on the road.

This means the cast and crew will be in town early and it's something that could be happening more frequently.

First, Proctors began a digital renovation of its marquee and the new flashing light bulbs are expected to be in place by the opening of the Disney show. It is a musical about the 1899 strike of boys who delivered newspapers.

Inside the theater, they're setting the stage for the entire national tour.

“That means that a good part of the rehearsal process for the actors and sets and how they get things on and off stage and how blocking happens and how they really figure out how to put a show on the road,” says Peter Hughes, the Senior Market Account Manager at Proctors.

Hughes says about 80 cast and crew members will arrive at the end of September. They will all be living in Schenectady for several weeks before they actually head out on the road for a couple of years.

The good news for the Electric City is that this could be happening more often with shows.

“So after they hit Broadway, they come through Schenectady,” said Hughes.

Hughes says Proctors has been working with New York State on tax credits to give incentive for productions to tech and build shows in the city after runs on Broadway.
