Flash flood warnings for northern Columbia County, Rensselaer County, southeastern Washington County, southern Bennington County and Berkshire County have been issued by the National Weather Service in Albany until 1 p.m. Friday.
The showers and thunderstorms over the warned area are expected to continue for the next several hours resulting in 2-4 inches of rain with some areas receiving up to 5 inches. This amount of rain will be enough to produce flash flooding on small streams and low-lying areas.
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. The National Weather Service advises to never drive a vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road.
