WATERVLIET, N.Y. (AP) - The city of Watervliet might be getting a supermarket with a bell tower.
Preservationists who are trying to save the former St. Patrick's Catholic church in Watervliet from the wrecking ball are talking to the developers of a supermarket on the site about a novel compromise.
The proposal being considered would incorporate the 137-foot bell tower and facade of St. Patrick's Church. The proposal would preserve a 124-year-old landmark and give the supermarket a unique look.
While the negotiations have taken place, a citizens group has obtained a temporary restraining order to halt demolition of the church while an appeal is made to the state Appellate Division.
